THIRTY-THREE
THURSDAY
Lexiâs phone buzzed, its loud ringtone amplified by the rattle of its vibration on the wooden coffee table. She pulled her arm out from behind Edâs sleeping form, but her hand was completely numb and shooting pains tore from her elbow to her shoulder.
âOuch!â
She picked up her mobile with her other hand. The screen told her it was Tom. It also told her it was nearly ten a.m.
Oh, shit!
âYes,â she said softly.
âLexi, is that you? I canât hear you.â
âItâs me,â she hissed. She didnât want to wake Ed.
âYouâre not in the office.â
âNo, clearly not. Iâll be in shortly.â She didnât have to tell Tom why she was late. But then he wasnât the problem. It was her own conscience that was going to crucify her.
âHead for Sherperdswell instead.â
âWhy?â
âMeet me at the track at Shepherdâs Hill.â
âWhat are you not telling me?â A sense of foreboding made her feel suddenly cold.
âJohnny Lycett-Boyd. Heâs dead.â
She let out an audible gasp and, beside her, Ed started to stir.
âWhat the hell?â
âHe was up at the racetrack â came off on a sharp corner, apparently. Rolled his car. Iâm on my way there now.â
âHeâs definitely dead?â She couldnât believe it.
âYes. No doubt about it.â
âWhen did it happen?â
âJust now. Twenty minutes ago, maybe.â
Lexi stood up, and then winced at the sharp jab of pain in her leg.
âIâm on my way.â She rubbed the back of her leg. She needed a shower and a change of clothing, but there wasnât time for that. She raked through her tangled hair with her fingers and avoided catching sight of herself in the mirror over the fireplace.
Ed was watching her from the sofa, fully awake now.
âIâm so sorry, Ed. I have to go.â
âI understand.â Of course he did.
âHave you got someone you can call? Youâre welcome to stay here if you canât face going home on your own.â
Ed stood up. âNo, I canât impose on you.â He shook his head. âIâm sorry about last night. I screwed up that date for you, didnât I?â
âIt was nothing. He would have been leaving anyway.â Was that true? Whether it was or not, she didnât have time to think about it now.
Luke had driven her home the previous evening, so she had to call a cab to take her into Canterbury where her car had been left. Once she was behind the wheel, she tried to put her muddled thoughts in order. There was no reason, from anything Tom had said, to suspect it was anything other than an accident. But given he was a possible suspect in Bethanyâs death and now Karolynâs as well, it couldnât be a coincidence. She needed to know exactly what had happened.
When a prime suspect in a murder case inexplicably died, it was hard to see it as anything other than connected.
A couple of miles west of Elvington, the Shepherdâs Hill Race Circuit was a twenty-minute drive from Canterbury. It was only a few minutes off the A2, and the main gates were open, so Lexi was able to drive straight in.
